Meditation is one way to relax our mind and body from an exhausting day. In fact, it is one of the best stress relievers.

Nowadays, most people are stress and anxiety due to the pandemic. Boredom and stress at home, make others do gardening, reading books, and many more. But did you know that meditation helps? Yes, meditation helps oneself to relax; gives a peaceful mind, and reduces stress, anxiety, depression, and increases well-being, self-concept, and perception.

What is meditation?

Meditation is a practice where an individual uses some techniques like mindfulness or focusing the mind on a particular object, thought, or activity – to train attention, awareness and achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state.

Some advantages of the Meditations are followed:

  • Meditation increases the positive emotions of a person and has been reduced depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress or PTSD. To successfully get this result, you should do Loving-kindness meditation. Loving-kindness meditation is designed to promote a feeling of compassion and love, both for others and oneself. This meditation may help those people who affected by anger, frustration, and interpersonal conflict.

  • Meditation helps to promote generalized feelings of calmness and relaxation. It may also help with chronic pain for it slowly and steadily relaxes the body. Some people use progressive relaxation or body scan meditation to help them sleep. In fact, it encourages people to scan their bodies for areas of tension. The goal is to notice tension and to allow it to release.

  • Meditation improves focus and memory; lessen emotional reactions, improve relationship satisfaction, and reduce fixation on bad emotions. Some evidence proves mindfulness may improve health. Mindfulness is the best meditation for you to achieve this result.

But how to meditate? Here are 5 simple basic steps.

  1. Find a comfortable spot to meditate. This should be a private, nice spot and free from external disturbances. This place should make you feel safe, at peace, and comfortable in it.

  2. Sit in a comfortable position. There are many recommended sitting positions like the lotus position, sitting on a cushion, and so on but whatever sitting position you choose, make sure to sit upright to facilitate the flow of energy. Avoid sleeping posture to meditate for it induces sleep that opposed to letting you remain in a state of awareness.

  3. Clear your mind. Clear your mind, calm, take a few deep and slow breaths.

  4. Sit and observe. Some people think that in meditation, they have to force themselves not to think and block out all their mental thoughts. It is really quite the opposite. Do not engage yet let your mind think. Try to be a passive observer and watch them from the back of your head.

  5. End your meditation. When you are done with your meditation, slowly ease into the physical state. Be aware of your physical body for 15-30 seconds. Then, open your eyes slowly. Get attuned to your surroundings. Avoid opening your eyes immediately instead continue sitting on the meditative spot and spend a few minutes expressing gratitude about the things you enjoy in your life.

Bottom line:

Meditation has lots of advantages and benefits that may improve your health and mind. It may also reduce anxiety, stress and increases well-being, self-concept, and perception, and making it a habit may give you better sleep and happiness.
