If you notice I have been emphasizing more on trafficking. This is because there are many cases surrounding this topic globally. Now I would not say it is an African-based article but European and Asia. Actually most of this cases happen more there than over here in Africa. Lets get back to the topic.
There are many factors hindering the efforts of our government through its numerous agencies in making our roads safe and in reducing road traffic accidents. Some of them are:
1) Bribery: some Road Marshals and FRSC officials take bribe from traffic offenders and motorists who contravened traffic laws. Here, both giver and the receiver are wrong.
2) Funding: government spends more funds attending to major health challenges such as HIV/AIDS, COVID-19 pandemic, etc. than in sponsoring road safety projects, traffic management and maintenance.
3) Illiteracy: some motorists are not educated as to have knowledge of traffic regulations or interpret road signs. They therefore drive recklessly and carelessly which can cause accidents.
4) Poor Maintenance Culture: many motorists do not pay attention to faults and servicing of their vehicles, in some cases as a result of poor economic situation or low per capita income.
5) Driving Schools: many of the driving schools we have in Nigeria are neither registered with the ministry of education nor registered properly regulated and monitored by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), for this reason so many inexperienced and poorly trained drivers are on the high way.
6) Inadequate Communication and Operational Facilities; such as ambulances, safety kits and other rescue equipment, all slow down the effective performance of road safety.
7) Inadequate Personnel or Manpower: there are not enough FRSC officers to man the vast road and increasing number of vehicles on the Nigerian roads.

Bribery is a factor that is killing the Nigerian citizens in fact this is what gingered the protests and all that has been happening. I pray all this will be eradicated soon enough. Police officials stop cars or public transport buses just to collect a small amount of money from road users.
