There was a massive hacking of Twitter accounts of a number of large exchanges and the founders of cryptocurrency projects. Fraudsters publish and forward 5000 BTC distribution messages.
On the evening of June 15, the Twitter accounts of more than a dozen major cryptocurrency projects and their founders were hacked to send out fraudulent messages. At the time of publication, it is known that the following exchange accounts have been hacked: Binance, CZ (founder of Binance), Coinbase, Gemini, Gate.io, Kucoin. In addition, the Twitter account of Tron founder Justin Sun, popular trader Angelo ฿ TC and news site CoinDesk was hacked. More accounts will likely be hacked soon.
Below are screenshots of most of them, as the originals will inevitably be deleted.
Coinbase quickly restored access to the account and removed messages, but most of them still remain in place.
Scammers do not diversify messages, they all contain one text: "We have partnered with CryptoForHealth and are giving back 5000 BTC to the community." They also actively use the pinning and forwarding (retweet) function to spread information as quickly as possible. Of course, they expect to collect some BTC from gullible users before information about the hack spreads.
It is not yet known how hackers managed to gain access so quickly to so many popular accounts, which together have several million subscribers. Probably, the simultaneous attack was prepared in advance and data was collected for a long time from different sources.
Update at 23:45 Moscow time
As it turned out, the Twitter hacking campaign turned out to be much broader and went beyond the cryptocurrency industry. The accounts of at least three multibillionaires and icons of American business - Bill Gates, Elon Musk and Michael Bloomberg - were hacked. After that, the total number of subscribers and potential victims already exceeds 100 million. However, the message from Bill Gates' Twitter was deleted literally five minutes after publication.
It is not known whether hackers will be able to cash out BTC after such a scandal, since most exchanges will blacklist their address, and blockchain analyzers will start tracking the transaction chains from it. Additionally, Tron founder Justin Sun is already offering a $ 1 million reward to anyone who finds hackers. It is possible that other victims of the hack will join him.
