What is it????

Dementia is a syndrome – usually of a chronic or progressive nature – in which there is deterioration in cognitive function (i.e. the ability to process thought) beyond what might be expected from normal ageing. It affects memory, thinking, orientation, comprehension, calculation, learning capacity, language, and judgement. Actually it is happened due to the death of large number of brain cell. As we know brain cells or nerve cells are constant, they can't multiplicate through mitosis cell division process . After the loss of brain cells in a large amount patient loses their memory permanently . Then they can't recognize their known persons even their children or parents. Basically it is not a sing disease, it is a consequence of a number of diseases. Alzheimer & Parkinson are the most common dementia till now.

Common symptoms of dementia:

Cognitive changes;

  • Memory loss

  • Failure or recognize people & objects

  • Confusion

  • Forgetting time & place

  • Thinking & planning problem

  • Difficulties with language

  • Misplacing things

  • Difficulty performing regular tasks

  • Poor judgement

Physiological changes;

  • Personality changes

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Inappropriate behavior

  • Agitation

  • Hallucinations

Treatment for Dementia:

Dementia is the most health crisis of 21st century. Actually there is no cure for most type of dementia but treatment, advice & support are available.

There are four drugs in a class called cholinesterase inhibitor approved for sympathetic relief

  • Donepezil (Aricept)

  • Galantamine (Reminyl)

  • Rivastigmine (Exelon)

  • Tacrine (cognex)

Ways to reduce the risk of developing dementia:

  • Regular exercise

  • Follow a healthy diet

  • Challenge your brain

  • Enjoy social activity

  • Look after your heart
