The Witcher- a white wolf with two swords
On this day, exactly 15 years ago, we witnessed the beginning of the role playing series The Witcher, exclusively on the PC platform.
On this day, exactly 15 years ago, the first game of the series called Wiedzmin of The Witcher was released. As you should already know, The Wither was born from the literary template of Andrzej Sapkowski, and was the first product that CD Projekt RED used to enter the business of creating video games. The rights to create the Witcher games were bought for the pittance of nine and a half thousand dollars because sapkowski did not believe that the game would be a success.
The Wither puts us in the role of Geralt, a mutant with fresh amnesia who embarks on a detective-revenge mission against a group called Salamandra. Along the way, Geralt meets a bunch of interesting characters to whom he offers his services - sometimes witch swords, sometimes witch his own limb.
As a PC exclusive, The Witcher could be played entirely with a mouse (no keyboards), with a bird's -eye view camera, which was a result of BioWare's Aurora engine on which the game was based. Previously, that engine was used for the Neverwinter Nights series. It was the first and last Witcher with that ability. Later, the series went towards being playable with a controller, and the first game remained exclusive to the PC platform.
After the PC version, The Witcher was to receive a console port a year later called The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf. However, that game was cancelled, and instead PC players got the Enhanced Edition with batter optimization, a series of fixes and two new adventures. Even greater success of the Witcher followed with the arrival of the second part, and the rest is history that you surely already know.
The first The Witcher is being shared for free on GOG.com, so if you haven 't played it yet, you can get it for free by subscribing to the GOG newslette.
