Sandpaper is the name used for a type of coated abrasive that consists of sheets of paper or cloth with abrasive material glued to one face. Although the most familiar types of coated abrasives are probably the individual sheets of sandpaper with which home woodworkers prepare furniture or crafts for painting, the trade term "coated abrasives" actually encompasses a much wider array of products for both individual and industrial use. While these products assume many forms, all are essentially a single layer of abrasive grit attached to a flexible backing. The biggest users of coated abrasives are manufacturers who employ large-scale abrasives in various phases of industrial production. For example, coated abrasives are critical in both the furniture and automotive industries.

Based on the case study that I read, the making of sandpaper is similar to making a photocopy. There is one machine that can do all the process of making the sand paper; it is called the maker machine. The first process is the workers will put a wide roll of 2 meters of paper in the machine and it is being coated with glue and given a negative electric charge. And it passed over sand that will be stick to glue and will be given a positive electric charge. The fact that all the bits of sand have the same type of charge ensures that the grains are evenly spaced. The paper then passes through a long, heated chamber to cure the glue. This machine cost a million dollars and can support a factory employing hundreds of workers. The chief engineer had a problem on purchasing a new maker machine. If I was in his situation I would rather choose to replace the maker machine, because it is old and if you replace it you won’t have to worry about it.

Based on the case study about GCG, Galt Casting Grinders is like a company, they cast things with a molten metal and pour it in a molding and after it cools down they finish using grinders to grind of the flash and to grind the flat surfaces so that the casting can be held properly for subsequent machining. And GCG got a problem about their sensible design. They don’t want to change their design just like other competitors. Their competitors change their design in order to attract more customers to buy their product. If I was in that situation I would also change the designs because people want something that attract to their eyes. People want something new.
