The Reason McDonalds Ice Cream Machines Are Always Broken

I understand your pain when pulling up to a McDonalds wanting a delicious ice cream or milkshake just to be told the machine is broken. It's infuriating. Why are the machines always broken? Wendys, Chickfila, and even Burger King use the same machine from the same company, and they never have an issue. There must be a reason why these machines are always “broken”. What's going on here? Some different sources claim that the machines need to go through a cleaning cycle, and this takes up to 4 hours at a time, so employees just say it's broken. Even though this is a valid answer, how come Wendys and Chickfila don’t have this cleaning issue? Let's dig deeper.

A Wendys employee stated “That's a McDonals problem, we wash are machines every single night and It's really easy to clean it, they are just lazy” So if it's supposedly easy to clean and quick to do then what is going on behind the scenes? In the McDonalds owners manual and it seems that somebody is getting paid every time these machines break. If you want to start a McDonalds franchise, you need to sign an agreement with all these requirements of what you haft to use. One of these requirements is a certain ice cream machine called the C602 made by a company called Taylor. See where I'm getting at? When these machines “break” you would need to call someone to fix the machine. Remember when I was talking about the agreement you would need to sign? Well, the catch is that the only technician that can fix these machines is a technician from Taylor. Do you know what's funny? 25% of Taylor’s income comes from their repair and parts service.

One new owner of a McDonalds store recalled that in the first few months of being open, they had to call the technician 5 or 6 times. That's crazy! if it's not obvious enough, these machines were built to be broken. Not to mention the crappy design and hardware. Taylor has manipulated and monopolized a way for recurring revenue while everybody else suffers. The machine doesn’t even tell the operator why it's broken. Taylor has no incentive to improve its hardware and machines. Having a bad machine makes them money. The reason McDonalds is even okay with this is that they don’t pay anything for the broken machines. The franchise owner needs to pay for these services and repairs. 13% to 15% of McDonalds machines are down every day. Those are insanely high numbers.

So how come Wendys, Chickfila, Burger King, and many others don’t have this problem if they work with the same company Taylor? It's because Taylor actually supplies these companies with advanced and high-quality ice cream machines. McDonalds is the only one that doesn’t resist these terrible machines. All this information probably is making you second guess going to McDonalds again, but don’t take that away from this article.
