Former CEO of Coca-Cola, Brian Dyson (1986-1991), once gave a life-changing speech. He addressed the priorities in life by using a metaphor of juggling 5 balls.
He said,
"Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling some five balls in the air. You name them work, family, health, friends and spirit. And you’re keeping all of these in the air. You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. But the other four balls – family, health, friends and spirit – are made of glass. If you drop one of these, they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered. They will never be the same. You must understand that and strive for balance in your life. "
On a personal level, it struck me as someone who is still figuring out with life in his late 20s. I have come to a point in age where I see my parents & my grandparents aging right in front of my eyes. Being the only child, I am filled with a sense of obligation to have them lead a better life & to make them proud. So I dedicated myself to an average of 90hrs a week to my day job and hustles. All this while, trying to find the delicate balance between juggling my personal activities & spending quality time with my family. To be honest, I'm not sure if whatever I'm doing now, is on the right path but I know that I've tried my best and that's what matters the most.
For those who find themselves are similar crossroads, don't worry. You will figure your way out. :)
All the best & take care!
