World Cup 1962 - Chile
The 1962 Football World Cup took place in Chile in South America.
Only one stadium was built for the World Cup - Carlos Dittborn, in Arica, for 13,000 people. The other three used in the World Cup underwent renovations. The country had Santiago, Viña del Mar, Arica and Rancagua.
In Chile, Pelé played for just a game and a half and saw, from outside the four lines, his great partner guide Brazil towards the title.
Despite Pelé's absence, Brazil could still count on the talent of Mané Garrincha, as well as Nilton Santos, Zagallo, Didi and many others. Without Pelé, "Anjo das Pernas Tortas" went into action, took the lead and led Brazil to the title. There were four goals, insinuating dribbles and hat-off performances.
The great champion of this cup was the Brazilian Soccer Team which, as champion of the previous Cup in 1958, had not participated in the qualifiers as it already had a guaranteed spot. Brazil had many players from the Swedish Cup, such as Gilmar, Djalma Santos, Nílton Santos, Didi, Zagallo, Vavá, Pepe, Zito, Bellini, Garrincha and Pelé.
In Brazil's first match, the player Pelé, who this year would become world champion for Santos FC, scored his first goal, but was injured in the second game against Czechoslovakia, not being able to continue in the championship. After this event, many say that this was the "Copa de Garrincha", considered by most to be the best player in the Cup and one of the main responsible for the Brazilian conquest, becoming top scorer of the competition alongside Vavá (who became the top scorer of Brazil's first two world titles) and four other players.
The campaign was of five wins and one draw, against Czechoslovakia, which they faced again in the final and won by 3 to 1, goals from Amarildo, Zito and Vavá.
In the three editions of the Cup before the Second World War, the Czech national team was considered a football force. After the conflict ended, however, the country did not maintain the tradition. Redemption came in Chile, when he repeated his best result: the runner-up. The Czech team fell into a complicated bracket in the first phase, with Brazil, Spain and Mexico. They finished in second place, but managed to show strength in the second phase and reached the Cup final.
