Legendary director Wim Winders has provided a moving portrait of his friend Pina Bausch, an internationally acclaimed dancer and choreographer who died unexpectedly in the early days of Wenders' documentary. A member of Bash's organization, Tanzatheater Wepertal, became an associate of Wonders, presenting his own memories and views of their mentors and leaders. An anti-communist campaign took place in Indonesia between 1965 and 1966, with historians estimating that the total number of victims was between 400,000 and 300,000. Half a century later, director Joshua Oppenheimer (along with Christine Sean and an unnamed Indonesian filmmaker) created the Act of Killing, a compelling and ruthless look to former members of the Death Squad - now respected in the society in which they live. In a way that highlights the limitations of their work (and their cultural outlook on it), former Death Squad members re-create their work in a great way in the style of cinematic genres - Western, musical, punk film, etc.
The Central Park Five 2013
When Warner Herzog said that a movie is the most terrifying and most surreal, that he has seen in at least a decade, you know you need to steel yourself. She is right. The best of this year’s Toronto Film Festival, and the most terrifying movies are here. It is a documentary about the Indonesian Death Squad in the mid-1960s who tortured and killed communists. But it’s also a film within a film, such as director Joshua Oppenheimer calling for the re-creation of works by an increasingly large-scale (synthetics, props, drug tourfit, soundtrack, location shooting) of elderly thugs.
