Greetings citizen of the internetz, this is the Fruitful Knight speaking. Or rather typing. For 2 months I've been knee deep in the marshes of decentralized and open source operating systems. Foraging out on different sites for nutritious tips to increasing my chances for survival. I left Windows fully because of various bugs I've encountered such as a constant blue screen as I wished to start my device, an obstacle that was only triumphed over though the aid of an hours long support call in the middle of the night as an important school deadline neared in the morning. Throughout the years I've always felt that the Windows OS was overburdened, filled with bloatware that is difficult to remove for a casual user such as myself. The Cortana app for example can't be uninstalled for some reason.
So my negative experiences led me to try out a Linux distribution called Pop! OS and it was overall a decent experience. Gaming was difficult, though it was not my main objective so I could live without it. Though I encountered odd scenarios such as having to choose between having my external hard drive connected or have access to internet, having to reboot every time the hard drive had been connected to regain internet, I still felt that Linux was worth it. Using an unusual operating system should theoretically make you safer from hacking and viruses, and since my presence on sites dedicated to cryptocurrencies implies that I hold them anyone in my situation should take precautions to safeguard against possible attacks from online opportunists. Even though it was a little finicky, I felt safe with my OS.
Overall I've had a good experience with Pop! OS, I've been able to video edit, record and surf the internet with a decent battery life on my laptop. But this Sunday I encountered a fatal error, as I had just watched videos on firefox I decided to access bookmarks on chrome but was unable to. Chrome could not start and so I decided to restart my laptop in the hopes that the problem might solve itself. Little did I know that was the last time I would use Linux, because my computer could no longer start. I got the little prompt that is on the picture below.
It seems to be an error with the graphics drivers, something I don't know how to update when I can't enter the desktop environment. When I pressed f2 to enter bios the second picture was all that happened.
And so I lost everything that was on the computer, which luckily wasn't much because I do make safety copies of my files from time to time. I found the manual online for my computer and was able to access bios through a key combination when the computer was shut down. So now I am writing on the afflicted laptop but using Windows 10 and after having removed Cortana and other stuff it seems that battery life is superior than on Pop! OS with a large margin.
So in conclusion, having giving Linux a decent chance, I wouldn't recommend Linux to anyone unless you have a lot of extra time to deal with mystical bugs and also aren't doing anything important with the device. It's not worth most people's time, better to invest effort in making Windows fit your standards. But that's just my five satoshis on the matter!
