Also known as the Philippine hornbill or kalaw, locally, it is a large species of bird in the hornbill family Bucerotidae.

As the name suggests, it is endemic to the Philippines and occurs in forests on 11 islands namely: Luzon, Marinduque, Samar, Leyte, Bohol, Panaon, Biliran, Calicoan, Buad, Dinagat, Siargao, Mindanao (including Balut, Bucas and Talicud) and Basilan.

The bird falls under the Vulnerable category in the IUCN Red List.

The bird has an entirely red bill or having bills with pale yellow on the distal half. It is also known as the clock of the mountains because of its noontime call.

The binomial name of rufous hornbill is Buceros hydrocorax.

Buceros is a genus of large Asian hornbills in the hornbill family Bucerotidae. It is a new Latin term which came from the Greek word boukerōs which is derived from two Greek words bous or ‘head of cattle‘ and keras or ‘horn‘.

The species name hydrocorax, on the other hand, might have meant “water crow” or “water raven” and might possibly derived from the two words hydro, which means “water” and corax, which means “crow or raven“.
