The Times Higher Education, the UK's leading publication in various surveys on higher education. This weekly magazine publishes a list of the top universities in the world every year. Universities are rated on a total of 13 different indices in five departments. These include income from discovery or research, international diversity, education system, research and the impact of research.

Oxford has emerged as the world's top university in the 2016-17 Times Higher Education survey. In the previous term (2015-16), the university was the oldest among the two English-speaking countries.

The second is the California Institute of Technology, better known as Caltech. Although it was at the top last time, this time the privately owned university has fallen one step. NASA's Autonomous Jet Propulsion Laboratory is also located here. Stanford University is third in the rankings. The private university, one of the best in the United States, had previously been in the top three.

This time there was no change in the position of all the universities from the third to the tenth place in the last ranking. The fourth to tenth local universities are Cambridge University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard University, Princeton University, Imperial College London, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and the University of California.

There is no good news from the universities of Bangladesh in this list. No educational institution in Bangladesh could take a place on this side of the list. Another feature will be published on the position of Bangladeshi universities in the world. Before that, let's take a brief look at the top five schools in the world:

Oxford University is still the best school.

1. Oxford University

No one knows the exact date of establishment. However, historians have found evidence of teaching at Oxford University since 1098. Alumni at Oxford University are called ‘Oxonians’. Many famous people have spent their education in this traditional university of England. So far, at least four English monarchs, six foreign monarchs, 46 Nobel laureates, 25 British prime ministers, 28 foreign presidents and prime ministers, six saints, 18 cardinals and one pope have studied at Oxford. Oscar Wilde, Stephen Hawking, Margaret Thatcher, Rupert Murdoch all came up from this university.
