Why were Japanese soldiers being so cruel to American soldiers during WWII?

No, I'm sorry to say the Japanese were way worse than portrayed in films. They behaved with incredible cruelty and contempt towards prisoners of war. This has been unequivocally established.

This is because in their code of conduct it is a grossly dishonorable act to be captured. Better dead than dishonored.

As a result, the prisoners were badly punished for allowing themselves to be captured.

My parents' friend was an Australian soldier who had been captured and spent two years in a Japanese camp. When he got home he was a living skeleton with a permanently pained expression reminiscent of the picture below. He had been a slave laborer building a railroad. So many died of exhaustion or were executed for the amusement of the guards - incredibly barbaric behavior for a civilized people like the Japanese.
