Heavy metals are usually present in trace amounts in natural water but sometimes some of them are toxic even at very low concentration. Aquatic environment can be contaminated by excessive presence of heavy metals. Contamination in aquatic environment is one of the leading pollution which has significant negative health issues and mortality .However it is considered as a global crisis. In this study, four heavy metals such as chromimum(Cr),arsenic(As) ,cadmium(Cd) and lead(Pb) were considered to be investigated from water and sediments of Karnaphuli River in Bangladesh. The objective of this study to measure the heavy metals level in water and sediment , and pollution level of the aquatic environment of this river. This study showed that the metal concentration in water was higher than the WHO standard. It also showed that the heavy metal concentration in sediment was also higher than the safe value. This indicates that the Karnaphuli river is contaminated by heavy metals which has adverse effect to the water quality and aquatic fauna of the river. The pollution rate is higher mainly in winter season than summer. The heavy metal pollution of aquatic ecosystems is rapidly increasing day by day. The main reasons behind this are unplanned urbanization and industrialization. The study suggested that a range of preventive measures should be taken to reduce contamination of water like chemicals.
Thank you😊❤
