We all have an innate desire to be remembered. Whether we want to be remembered for our work, inventions, wealth, or our contribution to society, we all aspire to make our mark.
Now, I’m not bound by loyalty to anyone that doesn’t care about my legacy.
I don’t want to be remembered as a post. I want to be remembered as a person whose words create the change that helps many people discovered their destinies.
I want to use my words to create something immortal.
But here is the problem with the life of a writer: It is an uncertain life. You often can’t tell if you are going to be remembered as a nobody who wrote nothing or somebody who wrote something great yet went unrecognized during their lifetime. Sadly, most writers fade into obscurities as their words never made an impact on any life.
This is one reason that I appreciate non-fiction writers. Most are creating writing that matters, helping us to wake up to the world we live in. While I still have a desire to make an impact, I would rather make my impact on my readers rather than the world.
There is a myth that most writing is crap. But is it? Does writing need to be ‘porn’ to be important? I believe that writing is art. Whether or not it is art, it should be of higher quality than porn or just fun.
A life without any art is like a body without a soul.
With all the stuff we have, we are in no way living up to our full potential. We have a cell phone, a worldwide web, a blog, a Facebook, a Twitter, millions of opportunities to create something different. Yet, most of us live like mopey teenagers, shooting games in our parents' basement instead of creating something great.
It’s time to bust the myths and create something that will leave a mark.
I think many writers don't care about their readers nor do they care to be remembered, whether it’s positively or negatively. We live in a social media-driven world that’s all about the ‘likes’. However, this world isn’t about the moment; it’s about the things that create something so amazing, so powerful that it can make an impact on the world around us.
How often have you had a poem, song, or piece of art that you felt deeply connected to?
How often have you been moved by something that was written, something that changed the way you view the world, the way you see others and yourself?
It’s not about ‘liking’. It’s about creating something that people will remember for a long time to come.
Writing is hard but that's not an excuse to do it without anybody in mind or how it will affect. Most of the writing that I have read has nothing for human benefits.
But I don’t know why.
It’s probably because most people think that writing can’t be done properly if it’s hard. The idea is that hard is the easiest kind of writing to write. It’s also probably because most of the people I know who try to be writers are just people who just want to make a quick buck.
Writing is not a hard skill to learn. As a matter of fact, anyone can write. Most people who think they can’t write, but don’t understand that the words they use for describing their inability are the ones that tell us what is stopping them from writing.
It’s our minds that hold us back. For some, they don’t know how to get started. They don’t understand how to write well or how to edit properly. It’s just like taking a test and not being able to read the test questions and fill in the correct answers. For others, they are afraid to write because they don’t want to fail.
I’ve had people who have told me that they can’t write because they don’t have any ideas. In the end, none of us know what it takes to be a writer until we are living it.
However, if we truly take a look at the writing I’ve read here over the year, we can easily see that there are people who have lived out their words. People who have defined themselves explored the world, and created art. People who have become a part of the universe that we live in. It’s not hard to find good writing. It’s time to bust the myths and create something that will leave a mark. And it all starts with a belief in yourself and one simple, powerful word:
Desire
.
Do you want to write something that is remembered for a long time? Do you want to create something that will change the way people think and the way they see the world?
You cannot get to start something that you do not have a desire for, it won't get you anywhere.
So what's your writing goal?
Do you want your writing to touch lives and leave a legacy for yourself? Or do you just want to make your mark in the world, to have your voice heard? It doesn't matter which one you're aiming for, but your goal should be something you can achieve. And that is, either to use your words to build people's lives or just enjoy the likes.
Either way, your goals should have a reason behind them. You want people to read your work, and to enjoy it, you should want them to know why you chose that specific word or that one particular person who finds your words a source of help. But if your reason is not just to get noticed for your talent, no matter how great you are, it is just as bad to just write without a sense. Why? because you don't have one. What you need is a purpose and a set of expectations.
Writing is so much more than just putting words on a page. It’s what you do with the words that will decide whether or not you are a writer or just another wannabe. You can’t expect to start with something that you don’t have the desire for.
Think about it for a moment. Do you want to be a writer or are you just writing because someone told you you should?
It’s time to put in some real work. It’s time to find a goal and stick with it.
