Let's talk about history
One of the largest underwater museums in the world is the Museo Subacuático de Arte or MUSA in Cancún, Mexico. Over 500 human-size sculptures are installed beneath the ocean at the Cancún National Marine Park.
Jaime Gonzalez Canto, Director of the National Marine Park, started the project in 2009. With the help of British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor and five other local artists, the organization aimed to save the coral reefs and marine life in the area that were being damaged by tourists, divers, and anchors.
Opened in 2010, MUSA features sculptures made from pH-neutral marine concrete. The underwater museum served as an alternative destination for tourists. As these art installations promote reef growth, marine life is expected to thrive and increase.
