Targeting the United States

Let's talk about history

Targeting the United States, the Japanese military started launching Fu-Go or fire balloons in November 1944. These 10-meter diameter fire balloons were inflated with hydrogen, each carrying one antipersonnel bomb, one incendiary bomb, and four incendiary devices. With the help of the winter jet stream, the fire balloons traveled 8,000 kilometers across the Pacific Ocean reaching North America. ⠀

Considered as the first intercontinental weapon system, the fire balloons were intended to drop bombs on U.S. soil. The Japanese forces launched around 9,300 fire balloons throughout the course of the operation, but only 300 of them were sighted on the skies of the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. It was considered a military failure as it only caused little damage, killing six civilians in Oregon. The operation was halted in April 1945.⠀
