Hello eveyone! History time. Today we're gonna talk about the Mary Kathleen uranium mine.
Did you know?
Mary Kathleen uranium mine is located in Queensland, Australia, the tourist hotspot Mary Kathleen used to be a uranium mine. It was named after the wife of Norm McConachy, who discovered the uranium deposit with Clem Walton in 1954. The site was developed into a mine and service town a year later.⠀
⠀
The Mary Kathleen uranium mine was closed in 1963 and was reopened in 1974. The operation finally ceased in 1982 after the mining reserve was exhausted. Radioactive liquid soon flowed from the abandoned pit when the site was rehabilitated. The chemicals in the water turned it into a vibrant shade of blue that attracts tourists regularly. ⠀
