The Wolfsschanze or Wolf’s Lair is a 6.5 km2 complex located deep in the woods near Kętrzyn, Poland, which is formerly a part of East Prussia. It served as the Führer headquarters of Adolf Hitler where he spent more than 800 days hiding from 1941 to 1944.
The Wolf’s Lair was comprised of three security zones with buildings camouflaged in bushes and trees. The bunkers that housed Hitler and his ministers were constructed with thick concrete walls. The complex was also heavily fortified with gun emplacements and minefields. ⠀
⠀
No air attack was ever recorded in Wolf’s Lair but despite its security, there was an unsuccessful attempt to assassinate Hitler in 1944. In the same year, Hitler abandoned the headquarter when the Red Army advanced to East Prussia. It was then destroyed with tons of explosives in 1945.⠀
⠀
Today, Wolf’s Lair ruins attract 300,000 tourists annually.⠀
⠀
Do you know another WW2 tourist attraction?⠀
