Good morning everyone😊 how are you today? Hope you're doing good. Another day another history topic to be publish😊
Let's get started.
In June 1776, the Committee of Five consisting of Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert Livingston was assigned to draft the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson composed the first draft and after a number of changes from the committee, the final text was presented to Congress on 28 June. ⠀
⠀
On the night of 4 July after the adoption of the Declaration, several copies of the approved text were printed by John Dunlap from his shop near the State House in Philadelphia. Known as Dunlap’s broadsides, these copies were distributed throughout the 13 colonies.⠀
⠀
Though the exact number of Declaration copies is unknown, it is estimated that 200 Dunlap’s broadsides were printed. Today, 26 copies are known to exist, and they are either kept in museums, library collections, or privately owned.⠀
