Good evening everyone, another article about history. Hope you will enjoy reading this and learn something from it.
Let's get started😊
The Star-Spangled Banner, the national anthem of the United States, was penned by American lawyer and poet Francis Scott Key. On 14 September 1814, he witnessed the British naval forces bombarding the Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland during the War of 1812. Inspired by the soldiers raising the U.S. flag above the fort, he wrote the poem “The Defense of Fort McHenry.”
The poem became widely known across cities when it was published in newspapers and magazines. After Key set it to the tune of “To Anacreon in Heaven” by John Stafford Smith, it turned into a popular patriotic song. It was then published as a song with the title “Star-Spangled Banner.” ⠀
⠀
The Star-Spangled Banner was adopted by the U.S. Navy in 1889, and then the military in 1916 under the order of President Woodrow Wilson. In 1931, it officially became the country’s national anthem.⠀
