History time : Notorious French Serial Killer

The notorious French serial killer Marcel Petitot served in the military in 1916 during the First World War. Discharged for stealing and unstable behavior, he later earned a medical degree under an education program for veterans. He then earned a reputation in Villeneuve-sur-Yonne as a doctor who supplied addictive drugs, performed illegal abortions, and theft. ⠀

During the German occupation of France, Petiot lured in individuals like Jews refugees who wanted to flee from the country. He promised them safe passage to South America for 25,000 francs. He then vaccinated them for disease protection but he actually injected them with cyanide. After killing his victims, he would collect their valuables and dump their bodies in the Seine river. Some of the bodies were disposed of in quicklime pit or incinerated. ⠀

In 1944, Petiot’s house in Rue Le Sueur was reported by his neighbors for its foul stench and a large amount of smoke coming out of its chimney. When the police investigated, they found human remains scattered in his basement. ⠀

In 1946, Petiot was convicted of 26 counts of murder and was sentenced to death though he claimed to have only killed the enemies of France. He was suspected of murdering around 60 people throughout his lifetime, but the exact number of his victims is still unknown. ⠀
