History time : National Flag of US

0 3

On 14 June 1777, the Continental Congress approved the first official national flag of the United States. The flag known as the Stars and Stripes had 13 stripes, alternate red and white, and 13 white stars in a blue field. It was first hoisted at the Middlebrook encampment in the same month.

In 1795, the Congress passed a Flag Resolution mandating that the flag should bear new stars and stripes following the admission of new states. In 1818, Congress enacted another resolution noting that a star should represent each state, but the number of stripes should remain 13 to honor the original colonies. In 1960, the current U.S. flag with 50 stars was adopted after Hawaii gained statehood in 1959. It was first flown in Fort McHenry during the Independence Day anniversary in 1960.
