Between 1764 and 1767, the region of Gévaudan in France was terrorized by a man-eating animal, killing at least 113 residents and causing 49 injuries. Most of the bodies of the victims were heavily inflicted on the head and limbs, a few were even decapitated. ⠀
⠀
Known as La Bête du Gévaudan or the Beast of Gévaudan, eyewitnesses claimed that the creature had a tall lean frame with reddish-gray fur. It had an elongated head with a flattened snout and pointed ears. It had a dark stripe along its spine, a tuft at the end of its tail, and talons on its feet.⠀
⠀
Among the many theories and conspiracies, it was supposed that the beast was either a lion, a striped hyena, a serial killer, or a werewolf. But according to modern scholars and historians, the fatalities were most likely caused by packs of wolves that infested France during that era. The stories were further escalated causing mass hysteria and creating a timeless legend.⠀
