Hailed as the “Night Witches,” the 588th Night Bomber Regiment was an all-female fighter pilot unit of the Soviet Air Forces which was feared by the Nazi Germans during World War II.⠀
⠀
The female fighter pilot unit was formed in 1941 through the urging of Major General Marina Raskova. With a short period of training and hand-me-downs uniforms from male soldiers, young female volunteers were expected to perform as pilots, navigators, maintenance, and ground crews.⠀
⠀
When the squadron was deployed in 1942, the female pilots were given Polikarpov U-2 biplanes. They used these flimsy wooden biplanes to carry out night harassment attack missions against the Nazi German armies. They were hard to detect as they carried no radar or radios. The only clue that enemy had was the whooshing sound of their planes that resembled sweeping broom, hence earning the nickname Night Witches.⠀
⠀
The 588th Night Bomber Regiment disbanded months after the war ended. In total, it carried out more than 30,000 missions and dropped about 23,000 tons of bombs on Nazi German targets.⠀
⠀
Name another heroic woman of WWII.⠀
