The design of the Flag of Singapore was never changed since its adoption in 1959⠀
⠀
On 3 December 1959, the British Government proclaimed Singapore as a self-governing state. With the proclamation, Singapore adopted its own flag and unveiled the State Crest and National Anthem. ⠀
⠀
A committee led by Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Toh Chin Chye was assigned to create the flag that would replace the British Union Jack, which the state used from 1819 to 1959. The Flag of Singapore has two horizontal stripes of red and white, and a white crescent on the upper corner framed with five white stars. Red signifies universal brotherhood and equality, while white symbolizes purity and virtue. The crescent moon embodies the growth of a young nation, while the stars stand for the core principles of democracy, peace, progress, justice, and equality.⠀
⠀
Even when Singapore became an independent republic on 9 August 1965, the design of its flag was never changed. Each year on the National Day of Singapore, the Government encourages its people to display or fly the national flag to identify with the nation. ⠀
⠀
Happy National Day Singapore!⠀
