History time : (Dogū) Prehistoric Japanese Figurine

7 9

The Dogū is a prehistoric Japanese figurine from the Jōmon period dated between 14,000 to 400 BCE. Around 15,000 dogū were discovered in the eastern part of Japan. The humanoid figurine disappeared during the succeeding period and its purpose remains unknown.

On average, the dogū figurines measure 10 to 13 centimeters. Most of the clay sculptures have large bodies and heads, and small arms and limbs. Some have large eyes that look like goggles, while most have marks etched on their bodies. Some figurines have exaggerated chest and accentuated hips.

Some historians suggested that the dogū might have been used in fertility rites. Others speculated that the figurines were used in burial rituals. A few others highlighted that it resembled modern-day astronauts and hence, linked to extraterrestrials.

Do you know another figure or sculpture with unknown origin?
