History Time : Cuneiform

0 12

Hello everyone here's another historical writing system. Enjoy reading😊

The Sumerians of ancient Mesopotamia developed the world’s earliest writing system. Called cuneiform, the writing system dates to the late 4th millennium BCE. Sumerians used blunt reed as a stylus to etch wedge-shaped marks on clay tablets. It started as pictographs and it was later simplified and then transformed into linear strokes. ⠀

⠀

The cuneiform writing expanded outside Mesopotamia and was adapted into several languages including Akkadian, Hittite, and Amorite. It was replaced by the Phoenician alphabet during the 1st millennium BCE and went extinct by 2nd century CE.⠀

⠀

When cuneiform tablets were unearthed in the late 19th century, several ancient literary works were deciphered and translated including the “Epic of Gilgamesh” and “Instructions of Shuruppak.” ⠀

⠀

Name another ancient writing system.⠀
