The small village of Castrillo de Murcia in Burgos, Spain celebrates the Catholic feast of Corpus Christi every June. Part of the festival is the “El Salto del Colacho” or “The Devil’s Jump,” a tradition that dates to the 17th century.⠀
⠀
During the El Salto del Colacho, men dressed in colorful costumes act as the Colacho or Devil. They run through the town terrorizing locals who in turn, throw insults at them. Babies born within the year are also laid on mattresses on the streets. The Colacho will then leap over the babies to cleanse them of their original sin. The practice is also believed to drive off illness and evil spirits. At the end of baby jumping, the young ones are showered with rose petals and blessed by the priests. ⠀
⠀
Despite the opposition from the Catholic Church, the tradition continues. Locals claimed that no babies were harmed on the practice since its inception.⠀
⠀
Name another bizarre practice.⠀
