Greek Fire

Let's talk about history

Greek fire is one of the most distinguished weapons in medieval warfare. Developed by Callinicus of Heliopolis in the 7th century, the flammable mixture had kept the enemies from invading the Byzantine Empire until the 15th century.

The Byzantine Empire often launch Greek fire from tubes or siphons mounted in their ships. Sometimes, they filled clay jars with Greek fire and catapult it into the enemies. The incendiary weapon could not be doused by water, hence, making it very effective in naval battles.

Because of its destructive power, the Greek fire’s formula was a tightly guarded state secret. Even when the enemies got a hold of the Greek fire, they were unable to recreate it or its devices. Some historians suggested that its ingredients might be sulfur, pine resin, petroleum, or quick lime. Today, the exact composition of Greek fire is still unknown.

Name another powerful medieval weapon.
