Transmission:
Dengue is a viral infection transmitted by the Aedes mosquito, which is found in tropical and subtropical regions. The symptoms of dengue can range from mild to severe, and in some cases, it can be fatal. Here are the signs and symptoms, treatment, and prevention measures for dengue:
Signs and symptoms:
High fever (often as high as 104°F or 40°C)
Severe headache
Pain behind the eyes
Joint and muscle pain
Nausea and vomiting
Rash
Mild bleeding (such as nose or gum bleed)
In severe cases, dengue can lead to a more serious condition called dengue hemorrhagic fever, which can cause bleeding, shock, and called hemorrhagic shock.
Treatment: There is no specific treatment for dengue, and it is mainly supportive care to help manage the symptoms. This may include:
Plenty of rest
Drinking fluids to stay hydrated
Medications to reduce fever and relieve pain such as Paracetamol (avoid aspirin, ibuprofen and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs which may increase the risk of bleeding)
If the condition worsens, hospitalization may be necessary to manage complications such as severe dehydration or bleeding
Prevention:
The best way to prevent dengue is to avoid mosquito bites. This includes using insect repellent, wearing long-sleeved clothing, and using mosquito nets while sleeping.
Eliminate mosquito breeding sites in and around the house by removing stagnant water where mosquitoes lay eggs.
Vaccination is available in some countries with high prevalence of dengue, talk to a medical professional to understand the options available.
If you suspect you may have dengue, seek medical attention right away. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent complications and more severe forms of the disease.: There is no specific treatment for dengue, and it is mainly supportive care to help manage the symptoms.
