Network Marketing History
Network marketing, also known as multi-level marketing (MLM), is a business model that involves independent distributors or representatives selling products or services directly to consumers and recruiting others to do the same. The history of network marketing can be traced back to the late 19th century, with the establishment of companies like Avon and Fuller Brush.
In the early 20th century, the California Vitamin Company (later renamed Nutrilite) was founded by Carl Rehnborg. Nutrilite is often considered the first modern MLM company, as it used a network marketing model to sell its dietary supplements. In 1959, Jay Van Andel and Richard DeVos, former distributors for Nutrilite, founded Amway, which became one of the largest MLM companies in the world.
Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, many other MLM companies were established, including Mary Kay, Tupperware, and Herbalife. These companies were primarily focused on selling personal care products, household items, and dietary supplements.
In the 1980s and 1990s, network marketing experienced a surge in popularity as more people sought opportunities to work from home and build their own businesses. However, the industry also faced increased scrutiny and criticism due to concerns about pyramid schemes and deceptive business practices.
Despite these challenges, network marketing has continued to grow and evolve. Today, there are thousands of MLM companies operating around the world, selling a wide range of products and services, from beauty and wellness products to financial services and travel packages. While the industry remains controversial and faces ongoing scrutiny, it also provides opportunities for entrepreneurs to build successful businesses and achieve financial independence.
