Keyboard is a very important part of a computer. Honestly, I was one of those who think that all keyboards are the same. That's the way I think about this device, until I was assigned to do a research on its two core types - the mechanical and membrane keyboard. As what I had learned from my research, membrane keyboards are more common. Though they say that all mechanical keyboards don't perform the same, many users still always go with it, especially when it comes to typing jobs. It is even more popular nowadays.

Membrane keyboards consist of a thin membrane that presses on a circuit layer and the circuit registers the key pressed. Mechanical keyboards have actual and dedicated switches that send in typing signals.

In this short blog, we will be able to spot the main differences of these two keyboards. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

· Membrane keyboards are more affordable since they are cheaper to manufacture, and because mechanical keyboards use more expensive technology.

· Membrane keyboards have a shorter life span because of the clattering keys, while mechanical keyboards are proven to be durable, thus are built better.

· Membrane keyboards are lighter and portable because they are usually made of plastic. Mechanical keyboards are of high weight since there is a hardware involved. However, this weight may be helpful by preventing your device from being pushed around your desk.

· When it comes to the sound or volume when typing, membrane keyboards are quiet for they have soft keys because of the rubber dome build.  Definitely, mechanical keyboards are louder but sometimes volume may vary depending on the model.

· As mentioned earlier, mechanical keyboard is better for typing since you don't have to press the keys all the way down to the bottom. Many users got the experience on their membrane keyboards when keys would not be registered quickly because it doesn't allow a "key rollover".

· Usually, the keycaps of a membrane keyboard are not removable, thus are harder to clean. Mechanical keyboard can be easily cleaned by removing the keycaps.

Both types have their pros and cons, but choosing between the two should always come with what is best for your purpose and situation.
