Today is Halloween, so happy Halloween everyone! So let's talk about how did trick or treats begin. Due to pandemic trick or treats events on any establishment especially in Malls are cancelled. I remember when I work at the mall before as a cashier, malls have their trick or treats events, some tenants will participate and prepare sweets for the kids who will roam around the mall after the event to ask for treats. It is also one way of malls marketing strategy to have more traffic and shoppers, they will attract the kids for the treats and let the kids lure their parents to buy some stuff in the malls. So if you are a thrifty mom or dad don't go to malls with kids, to avoid being rubbed lol. Well, it only happens once a year so let your kids participate on it they will surely be happy and it's also a way of family bonding since it's holiday, working parents will have day offs and free time to spend with the kids.
When did trick or treats begin?
We thought the trick or treating is like a modern event, but on 9th century is the roots where we can trace in Celtic Britain and Ireland.
October 31 at night is known to be Samhain, its a Pagan festival which was later combined with Christmas celebration and it was renamed as All Saints' Day by Catholic Church.
Pagan ancestors believed that the souls of the dead came into our world and will be appeased by offerings of food and drinks, this is what they called Samhain.
Trick or treating evolved from a ritual where people get dressed as ghosts and demons, performing dances around a bonfire and receive treats to appease the evil spirits as beliefs. This practice is known as mumming back in the Middle Ages.
When the Christianity had spread in Britain, souling was developed as a new practice. Poor people will visit the houses of the rich and get pastries called soul cakes, in exchanges, they promised to pray for the homeowners dead relatives.
Meanwhile, young people would visit their neighbors houses will sing a song, recite poems or perform some βtricksβ before receiving a treat of nuts, fruit or coins, in Scotland and Ireland.
What's the meaning behind the phrase?
During 1920s the term trick or treating was adopted in America. November 4, 1927 was the first time trick or treating mentioned in print, according to Today I Found Out.
βThe youthful tormentors were at back door and front demanding edible plunder by the word 'trick or treat,' to which the inmates gladly responded and sent the robbers away rejoicingβ.
A Canadian journalists wrote it, discussing the town's Halloween celebration. Under the threat of tricks, adults wasn't too happy being forced to hand out sweets when it was first start and saw if as an offer they could not refuse.
How does trick or treating work today?
Trick or treating on modern ways was to let the kids dress up in a Halloween costume before the parents take them to the streets or malls. People will go from door to door with Halloween buckets, asking for sweets from neighbors between 5:30-9:30 PM traditionally. But trick or treat in mall event usually start n daylight not early evening since the mall will close, as it is one of their ways to gain more traffic and shoppers.
