Why your tongue hurts when you eat pineapple

3 7

Eating pineapples often causes pain in the tongue. What is the reason?

Online media'World of Buzz' explained this phenomenon on the 23rd (local time). This phenomenon is actually caused by enzymes in the fruit. It is an enzyme that breaks down a protein called'bromelain'. Pineapple contains a lot.

When chewing pineapples, bromelain enzymes break down skin proteins in the tongue and oral mucosa. That's why I feel pain.

If you don't like this pain, avoid the pineapple stem. Bromelain is concentrated on the stem and center of the pineapple.

There is also a way to eat pineapple without feeling pain. Because bromelain is an enzyme, it decomposes when exposed to heat above 48°C. That's why I don't feel pain when eating the pineapple toppings on the pizza. The same goes for canned pineapples. Bromelain can also be destroyed by heat in the canning process.

In the meantime, if you don't like the pain felt when eating pineapple, try it by heating it with heat.
