Is There Such Thing As The Law Of Attraction ?
Some people believe that what you think is attracted to you. Nowadays we have a variety of books talking about the so called “the law of attraction” and, indeed, there are many successful people who support that idea. Whatever you may believe, here’s a list of things that can make the law of attraction work, or at least, make it look real.
The following topics are based on studies of neuroscience, psychology and hypnosis.
To start with, let’s ferret out the supposed steps of attraction's law and see how they would fit in a scientific point of view. Basically, according to books like “The Secret”, one of the most famous in the area, in order to attract something, you must first visualize what you want, feel every detail of having it, believe one hundred percent that you already got it, and then be grateful for achieving it. Most books stop there, another might add the need to work focused and feeling happy as you have already reached what you want, then the universe will provide it to you. Well, needless to say, thousands of people get frustrated after trying something like that after a while of having no results. To make matters worse, they are judged by other people who tells them “You didn’t believe enough”. So, why does it work for one and not for another? If it’s a law, shouldn’t it work for everybody? The thing is, by a scientific view, perhaps we should change its name to “the law of perception”.
“Visualize”
First of all, let’s talk about visualizing. Before you draw a car, first you need to have a picture of it in your mind, as more details you give it more realistic it becomes. That’s how it works for our brain, if you don’t have the picture of something, you will have no idea what you are looking for. Setting a picture of your goals will definitely help you achieve them.
There is something on psychology called “selective perception”. Selective perception is the tendency not to notice and more quickly forget stimuli that cause emotional discomfort and contradict our prior beliefs. That is, according to what you believe your mind tends to select what you notice around you. Then, if you focus your mind into something, it will eventually start perceiving more details as it was guided by a compass, and overlooking what is out of its priority. Notice that it can be either good or bad, sometimes we don’t even know what kind of beliefs are installed on our mind!
“Feel every detail”
Imagine that you are in a green field having a picnic, suddenly you see a beautiful lemon tree. When you slowly walk to it, you notice there are a lot of lemons on it. You raise your hand and reach a lemon, a big and yellow one! You come back to your spot, take a knife and cut the lemon in two pieces. You take one of them and bite to feel the sore taste of it. After reading this little story, if you were focused enough, your mouth probably started salivating. And some people may actually feel the flavor of the lemon in their mouth. Why does it happen? Simply because your mind can’t tell what is real or not. Another good example is smiling when you are sad, it tricks your brain in believing that you are actually happy, and then secreting endorphin that make your happiness real! Literally fake it until you make it.
Freud used to say: “Thought is action in rehearsal”. You can get used to an experience you’ve never had just by thinking what is like, mentally practicing. If you are not a charismatic person, you may become one just pretending you are. You are the master of your mind, as long as you take control over it. It’s not a mystical thing, it’s just the power of our mind.
“Be grateful!”
When we talk about gratefulness, some people find it tacky or a new age stuff. However, its proven the power of it in everyday life. Our brain creates connections according to our feelings, so when something happens, be it good or bad, our brain records it in other to protect or improve us. If you are a complainer, it can become an addiction, since your brain connect more and more situations that is going to make you find more reasons to complain. The same goes for gratitude, as a matter of fact, grateful people are more socially successful, since its easier living around them. Besides that, they are more motivated, since they normally see the bright side of life. It helps them to achieve more goals and have more people helping them to do so!
“Work smart”
Well, this one is rare to find on a mainstream book. Normally people stop reading when they learn they have to work to achieve their dream.
Only focusing on the good side of life is not enough for making things happen. You actually need to act, and that’s what differ people who reaches what they want from the frustrated ones. There is luck in life, but even lucky ones can lose everything if they don’t work to keep what they’ve got. But working is not about effort, it’s about acting, and it’s different. Studying to choose wisely the actions to take in different situations is what makes people go further. It’s no use write down one million times on a paper “I’m happy and grateful for my millions dollars on my account” but you don’t even know what you would do with that money after having it. Or you just wait in front of your PC, listening to mantras, hoping that suddenly it shows up in your account or win the lottery without even have played. Well, despite of things like that have already happened to some extremely lucky people, it’s not likely, and waiting it happens to you with no action, can soon lead you to frustration. So, move! People who changed their life being positive and grateful have this in common, they enjoy acting!
In short, there are reasons why believing in a higher force, that can support you achieve your dreams, might actually help you. Belief can bring you a lot of comfort and motivation, it depends on how you use it. However, you must always remember, it’s YOUR belief, and might not apply to everybody. People have different ideas on how the world works, as for the tips listed on this article, they are for everybody, being a believer or not.
