Why is Dubai called a fake city?
I've visited both Dubai and Las Vegas. Dubai resembles Las Vegas but lacks the casinos. The city appears to be a massive undertaking to conceal something beneath layers of concrete and light constellations. But what are they hiding?
Emptiness. The desert was deserted. An empty notion that mostly empty shopping malls full of widely available goods can somehow create or at least fill a cultural void. Duty-free does not imply emptiness.I understand and accept that jobs must be created in some way, but what happens when the shopping season ends? Perhaps it is for this reason that neighboring Abu Dhabi has built a branch of the Louvre.
In Dubai, I gave five conferences in five days. On day two, I was already out of supplies. I had already been told numerous times that leaving the city and spending the night in the desert is a popular treat for Dubai residents. As a result, I'm out in the void. Regrettably, I did not have the opportunity to follow in their footsteps. But one memory stands out: the Burj Khalifa. It is still the world's tallest building (829 meters), and it is breathtaking in every way. I stared up at it for hours at night. It's an aberration that somehow works, emerging from the void below to punch a hole in the void above. It's truly amazing (although I insist on dedicating this post to the workers who died building it).
