Filipino farmers had been infected with a virus for over a century now, and its spreads too fast that younger generations had been caried it for their young stage and until they becomes adult. They don’t have choice to embrace and even name them selves with this. And that is the virus of BEING FARMER IS BEING POOR.
Eunoia
Eunoia is series of article that’s depicts the life and issue of farmers who’s in loved with Agriculture.
At the first article we been discussed is about GMO plants (Genetically Modified Organism), followed by the controversial Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) and now and for the next uploads, I going to tell you the current story of all filipino farmers. And why Rich becomes richer and poorer stuck in a rug.
I symbolized the event to a Hybrid. Hybrid representation of new technology, innovation and new hope for farming and for the farmers. And here we shall start.
INTRODUCTION
Philippines is known as one of agricultural country, some of the produces had been flied to overseas. Rice (Oryza sativa) is the major crops that farmers grow, but outside the good harvest there is bitter taste behind. The reality farmers grow rice, but they buy rice. How it comes? We will discuss that here at Hybrid.
Some agricultural products are exported around the world. Banana (Musa sapientum) , Guimaras Mango (Mangifera indica), and many more
In other places, being called “farmer” is termed as rich man, having many acres of lands, uncounted sheep’s, cows, and horses. But the Philippines is a parallel to that, did you seen the viral post of modules from the Department of Education where they depict the example of Filipino farmers, where the family on the drawing is wearing an old clothing with repaired rugs.
I don’t say this is the face of farmers in the Philippines, but I want to show you that what you seen is too far from reality. So, the Eunoia Series is born, I want you to understand the persons behind the food serves in your table, the fresh fruits you eat, and the meat you are enjoying. I want you changed your views upon us the farmers.
Because you should thank farmers and maybe its time to realize the hardship they been unto.
Who Are Farmers?
I going to bring you to some sort of imagination and lets see if you could use some nostalgia. You were in car, driving or as a passenger. You opened the window then you felt the nice, cool air and the smell of the fresh perfume of rice field. You see people smiling at you, they are waving while holding some kind of grass in their hand. You smiled back at them.
You tired, and let the car stop for a little bit. Someone approaches you with holding some fresh coconut asking if you want some, and you got one. Upon sipping, you felt the taste you missed so much the sweet and fresh cold water down unto your throat. You thank them.
Next you seen some local fruit vendors, you hold one fruit and smell the yellow mango. The aroma of the ripen fruits comes to your nose.
They are the farmers; did you capture some image on your brain? Did you see the see those smiling face? That’s the people where choice to woke up early, earlier than the sun to shine. Just to prepare the seedling to transplant, water and harvest the plants just for your fresh breakfast and dinner.
What Are Farmers?
Ask ordinary people what are farmer? And they say, those people with dirt on their hands, sweety shirt, smelly one. Yeah, that’s one ordinary people see, are you one of them? Discrimination is another enemy not only for farmers, but those young generations who wants to engage in the stuff. Wearing your agriculture uniform, people will ask you the questions. “What are doing in school? Just planting? Just feeding animals? Just focusing in farm stuff?” I personally encounter that.
But the real definition of farmer are those who feed you, those who sacrifice even their life just for you. Who works so hard just to put those valuable things in your tables.
Why Farmers?
At admission for enrolling school, they ask me that question “Why Agriculture?”.
The world is now Hybrid, where farming is a great science and farmers is now modern scientist.
Young farmers today are highly intelligent people, I don’t brag that I am one. Another viral post of young farmers who grows apple in the Philippines, where we import apples for the hundred years because we say apple don’t grow at our climate. But were wrong.
Another example is the Grape (Vitis vinifera) vineyard. Where for last hundred years people believed that grapes could only grow in humid climates, but now Philippines produces its own grapes and its by-products.
I am also a mushroom(Pleurotus ostreatus) farmer. And you know that different kind of mushrooms are now cultivated in our country, shitake is said not for our climate but lot of farmers had been succeeded.
How to Be A Farmer?
Lot of people asking how to be farmer. Do you need large area of land? Irrigations? Plants?
We can be a farmer in a simple way. Plant indoor if you don’t have a land, use water system for your irrigations. To plant and harvest food for your self is also been called a farmer
UP NEXT: There are different kind of farmers in the Philippines, rich farmer and poor farmer. How it comes to have them? Find out in the next upload
