*📖DO YOU PRAY TO SHOW OFF?*
👉(Reading: Matthew 6:5-14)
🗓Saturday, September 26
📜But when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth; they have received their rewards in full *Matthew 6:5 (NIV)*
📋Jesus is very much concerned with the motive behind whatever we do. This is because we can be seen doing well in our endeavours but if our motives are not right, our efforts go unrewarded. In today’s reading, Jesus was talking in the context of our motives in whatever we do, whether in giving or praying. The Pharisees loved to show off their spirituality in public in order to demand respect from the people. They lay emphasis on outward things rather than on what comes from their hearts. This according to Jesus amounts to hypocrisy, which is seeking to please men rather than God. It’s important to note that in this text Jesus was not speaking against corporate prayer since there are several examples of believers praying loudly together in one place in the Bible. Everyone who is familiar with the Bible knows that there are different types and postures in prayer. There is corporate prayer and individual quiet time with God. I believe Jesus was talking about our one-on-one personal meditation with him. This and all other types of prayers must be done without showing off yet with a sincere and hungry heart. What attitude do you adopt in prayer?
