Have you ever heard of an occasion where humans collaborated with animals to create art? This is exactly what Tomas Libertiny, an artist and designer from Slovak, has to offer us. He accepted the challenge of presenting a one-of-a-kind piece of art to the world, with the help of 60,000 bees.

On one hand, bees are well-known as creatures that strongly resist any type of environmental damage caused by humans. On the other hand, they possess the ability to create incredible resistant works from their wax, and the bust of Nefertiti discussed below is one such creation.

Whenever we think about ancient Egyptian art, the bust of Queen Nefertiti is surely one of the very first things that cross our minds. Without a doubt, it is one of the most popular, and most recognizable Egyptian artworks of all time. It is also considered a true symbol of this fascinating civilization which has gifted the world with numerous invaluable artifacts.

Bust Of Nefertiti Is A Symbol Of The Egyptian Civilization

The incomparable originality and symbolism held by the bust of Queen Nefertiti is the reason why Libertiny selected it as the subject of his unique creation

As the first step, Tomas created a 3D model of the bust. Then, using it as a ‘scaffold’, he allowed 60,000 bees to build their cells on it, directly. The sight of these little hardworking insects creating art with an artist is absolutely amazing.
The completion of this project took nearly two years. Although it was initially displayed as bees shaped it in real-time, later it was moved to Rademakers Gallery in Amsterdam.
As claimed by Libertiny, his creation has a ‘specific purpose of protest and alternative vision’. By choosing a vulnerable and almost ephemeral material like wax, Libertiny intends to ‘contradict today’s consumer society’ through his creation.
It’s not a surprise that what’s created by bees possess ‘stable fragility’; they can either last a lifetime or can be destroyed in an instant. So, take a look at this awesome creation and share your thoughts with us in the comments!
