Venezuelans have drowned three San Franciscos! … of Cara; of Tiznados and Guayareguar / ¡Los venezolanos hemos ahogado a tres San Franciscos! …Cara; de Tiznados y de Guayareguar!

With the aim of building three reservoirs in different regions of Venezuela, three towns were flooded, which coincidentally have as an eponymous the Friar of Assisi and protector of animals.

The first of them was San Francisco de Asís de Cara, to make way for the Camatagua reservoir that was inaugurated in 1969 to quench the thirst of Caracas, the town located in the Urdaneta municipality of the Aragua state, was moved to Hacienda Guanayen located about 20 km away, sowing sadness among its inhabitants who had to leave behind their houses and the iconic Church that, when the waters of the reservoir diminish, emerges as a symbol of resistance and a witness to what was a thriving agricultural town

Con el objetivo de construir tres embalses en diferentes regiones de Venezuela, fueron inundados tres pueblos que casualmente tienen como epónimo al Fraile de Asís y protector de los animales.

El primero de ellos fue San Francisco de Asís de Cara, para dar paso al embalse de Camatagua que fue inaugurado en el año 1969 para saciar la sed de Caracas, el pueblo ubicado en el municipio Urdaneta del estado Aragua, fue mudado a la Hacienda Guanayen ubicada a unos 20 km, sembrando tristeza entre sus pobladores que tuvieron que dejar atrás sus casas y la icónica Iglesia que, cuando merman las aguas del embalse emerge como símbolo de resistencia y testigo de lo que fue un pujante pueblo agrícola

The third is San Francisco de Asís de Tiznados, it was not even relocated, it was simply a victim of the insanity of some government planners in the 70's, they claimed that due to the low productivity of the people and the high expenses that meant maintaining the town, it was preferable to build a dam on its site, a precarious excuse that was accepted by the central government and in 1983 citizens began to be evicted, some dispersed through settlements and nearby cities, others more attached to their land, they settled on the banks of the San José de Tiznados-El Pao highway, in the hamlet known as Río Verde.

Perhaps this is the saddest of the three “drownings of Franciscos” and it is captured in a film titled "Tiznao" by Salvador Bonet Domínguez; Many stories are told among the residents ... numerous stories that tell from ghost apparitions at the dam at night to more terrifying ones that claim that the town is drowning those who navigate its waters, the latter based on the high rate of accident rate of aquatic vehicles, the conclusion that the investigations throw is that there are too many trees in the bed of the reservoir.

The “Ricardo Montilla” reservoir as the Tiznados reservoir is officially called, although it was properly built on San Francisco de Asís de Tiznados, it was built for irrigation purposes for the area, it did not cover the highest part of the town whose ruins were declared a historical monument.

El tercero es San Francisco de Asís de Tiznados, éste ni siquiera fue reubicado, simplemente fue víctima de la insesatez de algunos planificadores de los gobiernos en la década de los 70’s , estos alegaban que debido a la baja productividad del pueblo y los altos gastos que significaba mantener el pueblo, era preferible construir una represa en su sitio, precaria excusa que fue aceptada por el gobierno central y el 1983 los ciudadanos comenzaron a ser desalojados, unos se dispersaron por asentamientos y ciudades cercanas, otros más apegados a su tierra, se asentaron a orillas de la carretera San José de Tiznados- El Pao, en el caserío conocido como Río Verde.

Tal vez esta sea la más triste de los tres “ahogamientos de Franciscos” y está plasmado en una película titulada "Tiznao" de Salvador Bonet Domínguez; entre los pobladores se cuentan numerosas historias… numerosos cuentos que narran desde apariciones de fantasmas en la represa durante la noche hasta otros más terroríficos que afirman que el pueblo se venga ahogando a los que navegan por sus aguas, estos último basados en el alto índice de accidentabilidad de vehículos acuáticos, la conclusión que arrojan las investigaciones es que hay demasiados árboles en el lecho del embalse.

El embalse “Ricardo Montilla” como oficialmente se le llama al embalse Tiznados aunque propiamente fue construido sobre San Francisco de asís de Tiznados fue construido con fines de riego para la zona, no cubrió la parte más alta del pueblo cuyas ruinas fueron declaradas monumento histórico.
