Advantages and Disadvantages of Taekwondo

Introduction

Its undeniable that taekwondo is considered as one of the highly form of self defense that everyone can use to protect themselves from other people, specially to those who have bad intentions. Though learning taekwondo perhaps difficult, it requires effort and determination to expertise this kind of martial arts.

Moreover, a learner must be well-oriented that taekwondo are being designed for a good purpose and learning it have advantages and disadvantages which affect whether our physical, mental or even emotional health.

To better understanding, here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of taekwondo.

Advantages of Taekwondo

  • Physical Health. It will increase our flexibility because before and after we do a taekwondo class, we must go through a series of stretches where in it loosens and limbers our muscles, getting ready for streneous activity and greatly reducing the chances of suffering from an injury such as pulled muscles.

  • Emotional Health. It will increase our confidence and self-esteem, since taekwondo involves various different poses, patterns, moves, strikes and anything else, every single time we learn a new move and we perfect it, it gives us a confidence booster and its simple as feeling good because we have accomplished something.

  • Mental Health. It will improve our goal setting and self-discipline because learning taekwondo is a great way to learn how to set and meet goals, as well as having the discipline to meet those goals, although we might have to practice for countless hours before we master a certain move or strike, but once we do it we can feel great about achieving our goals.

Disadvantages of Taekwondo

  • Physical Health. Having strains and body injuries. There are several injuries that can result from an aggressive practice, one is broken nose, which usually results from a powerful kick to the face. When striking boards and tiles, students can fracture their carpal bones, which can be painful and difficult to recover from.

  • Emotional Health. It may lead to frustration because sometimes during practices, students may be able to work off some inner frustrations, but it can get through learning combat where no real strikes or follow-through are encouraged. In particularly aggressive combat situation, students may feel frustrated.

  • Mental Health. It may occasionally leads to a false sense of security. Students earning status at their very young age often get a false sense of security meaning, they usually believe that they could defend themselves in a confrontation with someone who is perhaps far bigger or more dangerous. Often this leads to students putting themselves in situations they cannot handle, just because they feel secure (falsely).

Conclusion

From the above mentioned advantages and disadvantages of taekwondo, basically it is not suitable for everyone, but if you are willing to dedicate a lot of time and effort to it and willing to focus on practicing it the proper way, then it will benefits you a lot and it will adds value to your life.
