Many things, like helping the poor, healing the sick, and sharing the gospel, are important. But our Lord Jesus said that only one thing is needed. Let’s not be like Martha, who was distracted with much serving and forgot to listen to her Savior. People who are always worried about many things don’t do that one thing. But the people who do that one thing are not worried about anything.
You and I are probably the same. Like me, you probably have a hundred and one things calling for your attention from the moment you wake up. But I always remind myself, one thing is needful. And I find that if I do that one thing, God takes care of every other area of my life. The enemy may try to start many fires to distract you. My friend, forget about all the fires. Turn your back on what the devil is doing.
Pay attention to what your Savior has done and is saying, I know there are areas to take care of. I know there are challenges to focus on. But turn your back on them and do the one thing. Sit at Jesus’ feet and listen to His Word. Open up your Bible and say, “Lord, speak to me.” Do that one thing, and you know what? God will take care of all the fires, and the many things that you are worried and troubled about will be no more.
Is your rhythm out of control? Are things moving so fast in your life that you are left breathless and unable to keep up? If you are tired of that and want to walk in the restful, unhurried rhythm that our Lord Jesus walked in, I am here to tell you the good news: You can. You can reset your tempo daily simply by pulling away from the multitude of demands and going into the right one which is your heavenly Father.
