Annyeong Haseyo!
Do you feel like you've ran out of Korean Dramas and have no idea what to watch next? If yes, then you made a great choice in opening this article. I got you!
Today, I will recommend you the K-Dramas that I've watched, and still watching, plus convincing reasons so you won't have to say no. Let's get straight to it, now!
1. Go Back Couple (2017)
Okay? Three to four years ago? You might think this is not your cup of tea as many changes in styles have been made in K-Drama, and that it may bore you. However, I find its overall humor always fresh and funny everytime I look back or re-watch some episodes.
It's about a couple who has experienced the harsh reality of married life. They used to really love each other, but life gradually made them lose it in the process. One day, they just woke up to their 20-year old selves—in short, they traveled through time.
This drama will always stay relevant to me as many life lessons can be learned from it. A roller coaster of emotions, love, laughter, and sad stuff.
Prepare a set of tissues for some tear-jerking episodes!
2. Chicago Typewriter (2017)
If you're a fan of dramas with overlapping stories of the past lives and modern day, this is definitely your go-to drama.
A story about a famous writer in present time, who was in a difficult stage of his career—writer's block— along with his first ever fan, and a ghost writer. These three turned out to be great friends with an interesting love-friendship story in tha past. They had their own lives that took place when their country is still under the Japanese rule (1930s).
This is really an underrated drama, I must say. Everything is top-tier: The mood of the different eras, the set designs, the acting, the emotional impact that it gives every episodes—Just watch it.
I am honestly so much invested in the love story that happened in 1930s than in the present day. Tell me what story you preferred when you watch it.
3. 18 Again (2020)
Isn't it obvious that I have such a soft spot for K-Dramas that play their stories with time?(haha!) Because this drama is another one that involves time, too!
Aside from the superb visuals and acting skills of the main lead, Lee Do Hyun, I can never not notice how well-made the plot is. Everything is realistic, of course, except the fact that the main lead literally became '18 Again'.
Unlike the first drama I explained, only one character has become young again. Through the help of his best friend, he goes back to study (one that he failed to finished due to being a father at a young age) and discovers everything that he never knew about his children, and his wife.
Lot of tears, too, balanced with lots of funny scenes. This is definitely a must-watch if you want to see a story that tackles about love, dreams, family, forgiveness, and acceptance.
4. Arthdal Chronicles (2019)
Another excellent drama. Until now, I still don't understand why this masterpiece got low ratings on each aired episode. This is where I appreciated Song Joong Ki's professionalism and acting skills more.
Amidst all the repetitive settings for historical dramas where people wear hanbok dresses, shows love stories about a king, and either a princess, or an ordinary lady—this drama, went way beyond further than that.
It's literally an age where there are no modern weapons yet, where 'Riding a horse is a ridiculous idea', and the whole community is called a "Union" (union tribes that live everywhere) instead of a nation. The one that rules is called a union leader and not a king. This drama is basically a quest of creating a nation (which has never been done before, at least in the timeline of this story).
I could make a novel about this legendary work of art, but maybe I will make a separate review for this one. I can't wait for the season 2, please, make it happen already!
One really interesting (and addictive) feature of this drama is that the characters are not all humans. There are other human species called 'Naenthals' and 'Igutus' (mixed blood of human and Naenthals) I swear! The battle scenes are so realistic and well-done!
A little spoiler: You may have to choose between Eunsom and Saya. Who would be your pick?
5. Vincenzo (On going)
Another drama where our ever so talented Song Joong Ki is the main lead. You will surely love his Mafia version!
A story where a young boy is adopted and raised as a lawyer in Italy and became a Mafia consigliere. Some mafia chaos made him go back to South Korea where he meets a girl, who's also a lawyer, and with a not-so-ordinary personality and interesting principles.
Every episode will really bring thrill to everyone, especially those who love action scenes. I am gonna be honest about it. The leads' chemistry is so natural and addictive. And if you're already watching it now, tell me if I am the only one who has been in the "Just kiss, you two!" stage. The tension in their characters are so amazing, it makes us really impatient about what's gonna happen next!
This is not a typical "bringing justice to the wronged" concept of story. Vincenzo Cassano has his own belief of avenging the oppressed: "Evil must punish another evil."
Watch out for those 'Italian Man' scenes of Song Joong Ki. You might love him more!
6. When The Camellia Blooms (2019)
This would seem to be a calm, mild drama on the surface, but watch out for some shocking twist. I put it in this list as I am able to be intrigued by the mysterious type of personality of the female lead. She has qualities that are not typical to a girl that we use to watch in dramas.
She has an incredibly honest way of dealing with things, but she was always misunderstood. Her beauty became a subject of envy, but eventually, people around her can't just deny that she is an amazing woman, (a single mom at that) who never let the harsh cruelty of life change her beauty inside and out. I also love how the male lead has really loved her so much and treated her as how she should to be treated, when people around didn't do the same.
Prepare for some thrilling scenes here. This drama has certain points that made me hide behind my pillow, too.
7. When The Weather is Fine (2020)
When you want to take a break from tragic scenes, heavy drama, and just want to have a relaxing breath of fresh air while drinking your favorite type of coffee, then this drama is for you.
The mood of the set brings back sentimental memories about life in the countryside, a life without the hustle of the city.
It is a story of a girl who went back to her hometown to take a break from a stressful work. She then meets again her former classmate who runs a small library. She fells in love with the warm atmosphere of the people there, despite the winter season, and also finds peace in the midst of her own problems.
People who have experienced bullying, and betrayal of a trusted friend in school years, will relate much to how the female lead has behaved the way she did.
Character development is best portrayed through this drama, too. Simple, yet unforgettable.
So there you go! A few recommendations, just in case you haven't watched some of these works! If you already did, don't hesitate to comment on your experience and review of the drama.
I hope you found this article helpful. Watch out for my next articles!
