Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga
Japan's parliament has elected Yoshihide Suga as the country's new prime minister. His election was expected and he did not make much of a change in the new cabinet. Both houses of parliament voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to elect Suga as head of the new government.
Earlier in the day, his fate was decided when five of the seven factions of Japan's main liberal democratic party, the LDP, backed Suga. As a result, Wednesday's election was very formal. Earlier in the day, in the process of appointing a new executive for the top positions in the team, it became very clear that he would not walk out of the loyalty award. The same position was visible in the formation of his own cabinet. Neither any of the candidates contesting against him in the party presidential election nor their supporters had a place in the new cabinet.

He has chosen Abe's cabinet health minister, Katsunobu Kato, as his previous chief cabinet secretary. Apart from this, the Ministry of Defense is one of the few major posts that Suga has reshuffled. He has removed Shinzo Abe's brother, Nobuo Kishi, from the post of defense minister, and given him some responsibilities in the ministry of administrative and control reform. Among the key positions are Finance Minister Taro Aso, Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Hiroshi Kaziyama and Environment Minister Shinjiro Koizumi.
