Impacts of COVID-19 to students and educational institutions using PEST Analysis Continuation:
1. POLITICAL FACTOR
The laws or guidelines passed by the government and other institutions to combat COVID-19 are the following:
R.A. 11469 a.k.a. Bayanihan to Heal as One Act.
R.A. 11165 or Telecommuting Act/Work from Home.
Guidelines on ECQ/GCQ etc.
A. CITIZEN
With the laws and guidelines given to combat COVID-19, a lot of the things we usually do are now prohibited. Most of the people can’t go to work, leaving them any money to spend on their basic needs. Some people can’t do their leisure activities like going to the gym, shopping at the mall, and traveling for a vacation. Human beings are social individuals. It is difficult for us not to get in touch with the people we socialize with. The laws prevent us to go outside our houses if it is not necessary.
However, if we are wise enough, we can take this situation as an opportunity to improve ourselves. We now have plenty of time to work on our dream body, learn how to cook, prepare a new dish, write down our plans once this is over, and many productive things that we once told ourselves that we will do when we have time for it. Now is the chance to bond with our family, and cultivate our relationships with them.
B. BUSINESS
The business and private sector are highly affected because of the pandemic. Many businesses are forced to close down because the businesses that are essential in these trying times are only allowed to operate.
This is a Threat to business owners and operators. This means that they are prone to business closure and bankruptcy if the situation gets worse. The fact that they don’t have profit in the meantime, means that it is already a great loss to them. However, there are still businesses that are operating. And if these businesses do not cooperate with the guidelines given to them, their businesses might also be at risk. Thus, it is a Threat to the operating and non-operating businesses.
2. ECONOMIC FACTOR
The COVID-19 pandemic is a great Threat to the economic condition of the people, the government, and the students.
How does COVID-19 affect the economic condition of the following?
A. PEOPLE
The economic condition of the people who belong to the upper class is not affected because they have enough money to buy their needs and desires. They are rich enough that they will survive throughout this pandemic. The middle class is somehow affected because they won’t be able to receive help and funds from the government. But if they have built their emergency funds, their savings won’t be shattered.
However, people who belong to the lower class are the ones affected the most. Those people who rely on their jobs to be able to have funds for their necessities, to pay their bills and buy their foods. While it is already difficult for them to budget their salary or wages daily, it is now more difficult for them to come up with the money to buy their needs. They say, it is not the virus that will kill them, hunger will.
B. THE GOVERNMENT
The national and local governments have allotted funds in combating COVID-19. With so many funds coming out of the government’s pocket, the Philippines’ economic condition is highly and greatly affected and at risk.
With the closure of many businesses, it means that the taxes businessmen will pay to the government will be reduced. If and when the COVID-19 cases in the Philippines rise and gets worse, and all the funds are used, the country’s economy will suffer the most.
3. SOCIO-CULTURAL FACTOR
The New Normal requires the following:
Hygiene Protocol (wearing of mask, hand washing, coughing etiquette, etc.)
ECQ Protocols (Stay at home)
Social/Physical distancing etc.
A. GOVERNMENT
The government imposed laws and guidelines that the public is having a hard time to obey. Discipline from the people is their common problem in this trying times. Thus, the New Normal is a Threat to the government. The government will have to strictly implement the laws and guidelines. If and when these guidelines are not met, and force will come from the people, military actions will be done, and criticisms from the public will arise.
B. BUSINESS
Businesses have been closed during the entire lockdown or community quarantine. They have already accumulated losses for their business. This means that the New Normal is a Threat to every business in every industry. With limited people from households who are allowed to go out of their houses, businesses will have a hard time to recover their losses.
C. COMMUNITY RESIDENT
People are the most affected with the New Normal guidelines. Residents won’t be able to experience and do everything they were able to do in the past. But this situation can be an Opportunity to them to be better residents. If people were able to stay at home for a couple of months even if they want to, that means that people just have to inculcate in their minds that there are better and more productive things to do than let their time be wasted over unimportant things.
