THERE’RE DISAGREEMENTS ON HOW TO TREAT OUR ANIMALS
It’s heartening to know that our courts have recently meted out stern punishments to several offenders for animal cruelty. There’s no legitimate reason to subject the creatures to any kind of torture or suffering while they’re alive. My earlier approach has been rather simplistic - there’re animals bred for food, as pets or left to live in the wild. Then I realized advocacy groups were getting into more intense depths - on animal rights versus human rights and animal rights vs animal welfare. Most people will say they love animals and consider their pets to be part of heir family but will still draw a clear line. Why should they have rights like humans, and isn’t it enough that they’re treated humanely?
Vegetarians will want a vegan world where animals are no longer used for food, clothing or entertainment. I’m not so sure about the food part, as I have never imagined a life without meat, but we can still make do without fur clothes or circuses. The number of abuse cases being reported has risen, mostly for pet dogs & cats. With smartphones, public members can easily captures acts of cruelty and make them go viral on social media. I think the idea of treating animals humanely is vague and can mean something different to everyone. The concept of “humane meat” is contradictory as the animals must still be killed to obtain the meat. I think a man who’s cruel to animals is also likely to be cruel in his dealings with humans.
