The “Mona Lisa”, or “Gioconda” (her more correct name) is arguably one of the most famous paintings in the world.
Many people consider it a masterwork. I don’t. I find it to be a very muddy, not-so-well painted work. Da Vinci created other works that are so much more beautifully accomplished from a technical point of view. One of them is "La Belle Ferronière", almost the same size, which used to hang just down the hall from this one until it was moved to the Louvre Abu Dhabi.
Yet the Mona Lisa has compelled the attention of viewers for a long, long time. And the reason is her famous enigmatic expression. She is not particularly beautiful. Beauty is variable by culture, time, and an individual viewer. But enigma? Ah - that is the artist’s - and the lover's - most enticing and seductive tool. Will she or won't she? Does she or doesn't she?
When it is in a painting - where we cannot inquire, and history is unavailable? We will never, ever know for certain. We will ask ourselves and each other forever. Mona Lisa is the eternal tease - a mirror of every fantasy we wish to bring to her.
So you can relax. You are not “missing” anything.
She simply has not captured you with her smile. Ignore the hype. The next time you’re in Abu Dhabi, go see what really makes da Vinci great. Or, pop over to the National Museum of Krakow in Poland and take a look at The Lady with an Ermine.

La Belle Ferronière - real identity? Lucia Crivelli, or perhaps Beatrice d’Este. If you want enigma? Here it is - This woman is truly mysterious - and strong.
And for comparison, the lady of enigma, La Gioconda, or Mona Lisa. The hands are gorgeous. And you can see that the smile makes her somehow more approachable. This is her secret, and a good bit of her attraction.
