We watched a movie entitled “Gung Ho”,it talks about when a western Pennsylvania auto plant is acquired by a Japanese company, brokering auto worker Hunt Stevenson (Michael Keaton) faces the tricky challenge of mediating the assimilation of two clashing corporate cultures.

I learned so many things when watching that kind of movie. At first its kind a bit boring but when you analyze the scenario of every part of events you will realize something. Like Hunt Stevenson stated that production went up 10%.  However, his boss debated the quality of production is 40% in Japan.  As a result, Hunt Stevenson makes a deal with his boss by promising his workers that they would produce 15,000 cars within a month or they would not get a raise. Instead Hunt Stevenson had promised them 13,000 cars and they would be offered a 1/2 rise. In that scene he lied to his co workers about the deal in order to boost their confidence but we should remember that “Honesty is the best policy” when you break someone’s trust, it’s difficult to return the gain trust.

You can also notice the management style of the Japanese because they are like boss-centered rather than employee-centered. They think more on the company’s name rather than his workers. You must work hard in order to have more production and more income. And you will notice then the principles to traditional American manufacturing practices and the Japanese manufacturing practices.

However, even though they have different cultures and practices in managing a business if they are willing to learn and grow something, surely they will accomplish something. Taking the time to understand other cultures helps everyone become more open minded and creative.
